Chandrababu Naidu, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has recently reaffirmed his vision to make Amaravati the sole capital of the state. This announcement aligns with his long-standing goal of developing Amaravati into a world-class city, which he initially set in motion during his previous term as Chief Minister before 2019.
The capital city’s construction had been stalled when the YSR Congress Party, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, came into power and introduced the controversial three-capital model. Under that plan, Andhra Pradesh would have three capitals: Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital. This approach was meant to decentralize governance and promote equitable regional development, but it led to a great deal of political and public debate.
Naidu’s recent declaration signals a return to his vision of Amaravati as the state’s only capital, marking a significant policy shift from the previous government’s strategy. He aims to resume the stalled projects and bring rapid development to the city, pushing back against the multi-capital approach. This move is likely to reignite political debates and could influence future developments in Andhra Pradesh.
